Dear friends,
You are invited to attend the annual Spring retreat at AIAB in Lotus Pond Temple. The theme of this retreat is the role of meditation in helping us to live a life of freedom. In particular, we will study and practice the teachings of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh as taught in the 14 Verses on Meditation by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay)
Verse 10 of the 14 verses says:
Nirvana is nonattainment.
Sudden or gradual enlightenment are not different.
True realization is to live in freedom
right now in this moment.
Meditation practitioners want to attain nirvana in their practice. Nirvana as taught by the Buddha is the absence of discriminating thoughts, of greed and hatred which arise from ignorance. It is not a place that people would go to after passing away, as it is misunderstood at times. Nirvana exists in daily life. We just need to be mindful in order to realize it. Cultivating peace and happiness, transforming pain and suffering, and living a healthy and companionate life .... are things for us to do in daily life to realize nirvana, to live in freedom.
The Buddha gives concrete teachings in how to transform our body and mind, from samsara to nirvana which means from pain and suffering to peace and happiness. Thich Nhat Hanh emphasizes these teachings in verse 11.
The essential sutras, such as the Discourses on the Full Awareness of Breathing
and the Four Establishments of Mindfulness,
show me the path to transform body and mind, step by step.
The Discourses on the Full Awareness of Breathing and Four Establishments of Mindfulness are foundations for all schools of Buddhist meditation. Studying and practicing the two discourses will help us go through many meditation methods with ease. In verse 13, Thay stresses that our practices should be about transforming pain and suffering to peace and happiness, as taught in the Four Noble Truth.
Not discriminating
between the practice offered by the
Tathagata and that of the ancestral teachers,
the Four Noble Truths perfectly interwoven
should serve as the foundation of an authentic transmission.
In this retreat, we will cover the above teachings and practices. We will see how they are applied in everyday life, and not as theoretical concepts. They will help us cultivating peace and happiness, transforming pain and suffering and living a healthy and compassionate life. We will practice mindful breathing, mindful walking, and pleasant smiling. We will go back to the present moment, enjoying the beautiful scenery of Lotus Pond Temple. We will enjoy the presence of our friends and fellow practitioners, who also take the time off from the busy daily routines to slow down, to enjoy a walk, to just be there for the present moment, for the preciousness of life.
